Anubis Mask 2016 20160815_224810I begin my masks with a paper sculpt.20160818_215238Once I am satisfied with the paper sculpt, I coat it in rondo, a mix of fiberglass resin and bondo body filler. This makes it rigid and easier to make a pattern from.20160818_215552After the rondo sets, I cover the sculpt in aluminum foil.20160818_220935The aluminum foil is now coated in tape20160818_221202The taped up foil is now pulled from the sculpt. This will become the pattern.20160818_222621The foil/paper is now cut until it lays flat. Note that registration marks were made before cutting flat.20160818_225209The pattern is transferred to eva foam. Note the pattern has been traced once forward and once backwards in order to create both sides of the mask.20160818_230920The pattern pieces have been cut out20160819_195051The pieces have been heat formed using a heat gun.20160819_214628The mask is now glued together using barge cement. Note it isn't quite right, this is due to moving the pattern from thin paper to thick foam. A little cutting and sanding will fix this.20160821_190749A few adjustments have been made and significant sanding has been done20160829_214905Teeth have been sculpted from Sculpey II Translucent20160829_214924More rondo has been applied to the inside of the nose for added rigidity20160831_000753Rondo on the lower jaw and drilled tooth sockets20160908_203801Inner jaw has been painted and teeth set into place20160913_211058Using more paper to draft out brows, cheeks, and ears.20160914_220943Brow and cheek patterns20160921_220945Brows and cheeks are now applied20160921_220924Ears, made from upholstery foam20160921_224140Ears attached to the head. They've got some droop to them, which I was not fond of. Looks great for a bat though, so I kept the pattern.20161002_134559A device I built to hold the ears straight.20161002_135947Ear holder is put in place to hold the ears while I add Epsilon Pro for rigidity20161006_205002Epsilon Pro has been applied, resulting in a now rigid and free-standing ear20161010_221524Ears now painted with Krylon Specialty Gold paint20161010_225746I added some gold rays to the ear using Rub 'n Buff20160930_210736I've cut off the nose to reveal the rondo. I'll be sculpting and replacing this with a silicone nose20160930_213436New nose made with Sculpy20161001_154538Texture tools made from silicone. I lifted these textures from various objects and used one to texture the nose20161001_193703Sculpted and baked nose20161006_204922I created a mold using the Sculpy nose, and from that cast a silicone nose20160913_211139Similarly, I created a tongue using Sculpy, created a silicone mold, and created a foam casting.20161009_185248The Eye of Horus is pretty much the eye everyone thinks of when they think Egyptian. It's not the eye Anubis has, but it's so iconic I used it anyway. I created a flat sculpt from Sculpy and created a silicone mold from it.20161009_203514Resin castings. Note these castings are curved. Urethane resins are soft when pulled too early, so I cast them flat, pulled them before fully cured, and placed them on the mask to get a form-fitting curve20161012_230618Eye of Horus added, buckram eyes added20161014_000610Eye of Horus, tongue, and circlet added, ears furred.20161016_144054Mask mostly completed, only the headdress remains20161025_235252View of the inside. Notice there is a cooling fan.
